Brazil Hosts First Maritime Unmanned Systems Exercise

Brazilian Navy Conducts Pioneering Maritime Unmanned Systems Exercise

In mid-November, the Brazilian Navy executed its inaugural operational experimentation of Maritime Unmanned Systems (MUS), termed the ‘ARAMUSS 2025’ (Aratu Maritime Unmanned Systems Simulation). This significant exercise took place at the Aratu Naval Complex, encompassing critical areas including the Aratu Naval Base, Bay of Aratu, and Bay of All Saints, situated in Salvador, Bahia.

Objectives of ARAMUSS 2025

The primary goal of this exercise was to showcase and assess various unmanned technologies, facilitating the exchange of technical knowledge among stakeholders. The event was organized by the Minelaying and Minesweeping Force Command of the 2nd Naval District and aimed to enhance Brazil’s operational capabilities in maritime security. Key objectives included:

  • Demonstration of Technologies: Evaluate new unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), drones (UAVs), remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) within mine-countermeasures (MCM) frameworks.
  • Ensuring Maritime Security: Unmanned systems were deployed to protect commercial shipping routes along the coast against mine threats during live exercises.

Commander Rodrigo Bouças, head of the Minelaying and Minesweeping Force Command, emphasized that ARAMUSS 2025 provided a realistic operational environment for testing advanced maritime capabilities.

Operational Focus Areas

Operational demonstrations during the exercise extended beyond traditional mine-countermeasure operations, encompassing multiple domains:

  • Protection of Undersea Infrastructure: Safeguarding critical underwater assets against various threats.
  • Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR): Enhancing situational awareness through persistent monitoring.
  • Integrated Command-and-Control (C2): Streamlining operations across multiple domains for effective multi-tier operational coordination.
  • Data Exploitation: Utilizing collected information to inform strategic decisions and operational planning.

Future Implications

As part of its ongoing commitment to advance unmanned system capabilities, the Brazilian Navy is likely to place orders for systems like the Suppressor 7 USV, indicating a strategic focus on improving maritime defense operations. The ARAMUSS 2025 exercise not only validates the integration of cutting-edge technology within naval operations but also sets a foundation for future endeavors in maritime security and defense strategy development. For defense professionals and analysts, the insights gleaned from this exercise will be pivotal in understanding emerging trends in maritime unmanned operations and their potential ramifications for regional security dynamics.
