Đuro Đaković: Croatia’s Longstanding Expertise in Defence and Armored Vehicles
Croatian industrial group Đuro Đaković has a long-established presence in the defence sector, with capabilities centered on armored combat vehicles, military equipment, vehicle maintenance and modernization. Through its specialized-vehicles division, the company combines manufacturing experience with technical support and lifecycle services for military platforms.
The group’s defence activities form part of a broader industrial portfolio, while Đuro Đaković Special Vehicles focuses specifically on armored combat vehicles, humanitarian demining machines and specialized railway vehicles. Its military production program includes the M-84 main battle tank and the Patria AMV 8×8, alongside maintenance and modernization services for armored platforms.
M-84 Main Battle Tank and Modernization Capabilities
One of the most recognizable products associated with Đuro Đaković’s defence activities is the M-84 main battle tank. The company began serial production of the M-84 in 1983, establishing significant experience in the production and support of tracked armored vehicles.
The M-84 is based on the Soviet T-72 design but incorporates a number of modifications and upgrades. According to Đuro Đaković, the platform features a 125 mm smoothbore gun, automatic loading, a modern fire-control system, upgraded engine, new radio equipment and an NBC detection system. The company also provides overhaul and modernization services for M-84 and T-72 tanks, supported by spare-parts supply, technical support, training and maintenance programs.
This combination of manufacturing knowledge and lifecycle support gives the company a role beyond the production of individual platforms, extending into the long-term maintenance and modernization of existing armored fleets.
Patria AMV 8×8 and Modular Defence Solutions
Another major part of Đuro Đaković’s defence portfolio is the Patria AMV 8×8, produced through cooperation with Finnish company Patria Land & Armament Oy following a complete transfer of technology. The platform is designed around a modular architecture, allowing different configurations to be developed from the same basic vehicle.
The AMV 8×8 can be configured for several roles, including infantry combat, command, ambulance and recovery missions. Listed configurations include vehicles equipped with 12.7 mm machine guns, a 30 mm automatic cannon and SPIKE missile integration, as well as command, medical and recovery variants. The platform has a combat weight of 26 tonnes, engine power of 405 kW, a maximum speed exceeding 100 km/h and an operating radius of approximately 600–800 km, depending on configuration and operating conditions.
Đuro Đaković also emphasizes integral logistic support for the AMV 8×8 fleet, covering activities ranging from training to broader fleet-support structures tailored to customer requirements.
Defence Manufacturing and Long-Term Support
Đuro Đaković's defence activities are supported by decades of experience in military production and industrial engineering. The company states that its history includes contributions to the Croatian defence sector during the 1991–1995 period, while its post-war activities expanded into armored fighting vehicles and cooperation with international defence companies such as Patria and Kongsberg.
Today, Đuro Đaković Special Vehicles combines production, maintenance and modernization capabilities. Its certified scope includes the development, design, production and servicing of special vehicles and equipment for military purposes, alongside other industrial activities. Its ISO 9001:2015 certification for this scope is valid through April 2028.
With its experience in tracked and wheeled armored platforms, modernization programs and integrated support, Đuro Đaković remains one of the established Croatian industrial names operating in the European defence sector.
