First Domestically Built AW149 Delivered to Polish Armed Forces

Delivery of AW149 Helicopters to the Polish Armed Forces

On 27 November, the Polish Armed Forces received their first domestically produced Leonardo AW149 armed battlefield utility helicopter. This delivery is a significant step in Poland’s modernization efforts and contributes to enhanced aerial capabilities.

Key Details of the Helicopter Acquisition

  • First Helicopter Specification: The helicopter, designated tail number 6709, was formally presented by Poland’s Minister of National Defence, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, to the 25th Air Cavalry Brigade.
  • Production Overview: The AW149’s maiden flight occurred in April at PZL-Świdnik, marking a vital milestone in its development. Poland plans to acquire a total of 32 AW149 helicopters, with 27 units to be manufactured domestically, supplementing five units constructed in Italy at the Vergiate facility. Deliveries are slated to continue through 2029.

Operational Readiness

The Polish Army received authorization for operational deployment of the AW149 in January 2024. This approval allows the military to initiate the phased retirement of older platforms, namely the Mil Mi-2 ‘Hoplite’ and certain variants of the PZL-Świdnik W-3PL Głuszec multirole helicopters.

Broader Procurement Strategy

The acquisition of the AW149 is part of a larger helicopter procurement strategy aimed at enhancing Poland’s defense posture. This strategy includes:

  • Attack Helicopters: 96 Boeing AH-64E Apache Guardian helicopters.
  • Maritime Capabilities: Four maritime-focused Leonardo AW101 Merlins.
  • Land-Based Operations: An additional 22 AW101 Merlins designated for land roles.

Previously, Poland was set to procure 32 Lockheed Martin S-70i Black Hawk helicopters. However, a reassessment of defense needs—particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine—has led to a postponement of this acquisition.

Future Helicopter Training Programs

Poland is also actively exploring the procurement of new training helicopters to align with its expanding operational requirements. Potential candidates include:

  • Airbus H145
  • Bell 505
  • Leonardo AW109

These initiatives underline Poland’s commitment to building a robust and versatile air capability in response to evolving security challenges.
