Northrop Grumman Advances Development of IVEWS
Enhancement of F-16 Capabilities with IVEWS
The United States Air Force (USAF) is set to modernize its F-16 fleet with the integration of Northrop Grumman’s AN/ALQ-257 Integrated Viper Electronic Warfare Suite (IVEWS). This upgrade represents a significant boost to the fighter jets’ operational effectiveness in future confrontations.
Program Status and Performance
Jim Conroy, Northrop Grumman’s Vice President for electronic warfare and targeting, recently indicated that the IVEWS initiative is “on cost, on schedule, and exceeding performance expectations in the electronic warfare domain.” This assessment was shared during the Air & Space Forces Association’s Air, Space & Cyber Conference 2025 in National Harbor, Maryland, highlighting the program’s promising trajectory.
Integrated Electronic Warfare Suite
A standout feature of IVEWS is its fully internal architecture, which does not alter the external configuration of the F-16. Conroy emphasized the importance of maintaining the F-16’s aerodynamic integrity for safety during flight operations, underscoring the need for rigorous adherence to the aircraft’s operational envelope.
Key attributes of IVEWS include:
- Autonomous Functions: The system can automatically detect, identify, track, and self-protect, eliminating the need for external pods or towed decoys.
- Background Geolocation: It offers geolocation capabilities while ensuring that it does not interfere with other operational functions.
- Legacy System Replacement: IVEWS supersedes multiple older systems and pods, consolidating capabilities and reducing the aircraft’s physical footprint.
- 360-Degree Coverage: The suite provides comprehensive situational awareness through its advanced detection, identification, and jamming functionalities.
Interoperability with Advanced Systems
IVEWS is designed for full digital interoperability with the Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) AN/APG-83. Conroy elaborated that this synergy enables simultaneous functioning of electronic warfare tasks alongside radar operations, optimizing the aircraft’s multi-functional performance capabilities.
This visionary approach to upgrading resource allocation within the F-16 fleet equips the USAF with a formidable edge in the realm of electronic warfare, reinforcing its readiness for future operational challenges.
