Orqa: Croatian FPV Technology Expanding Into Defense
Croatian technology company Orqa is developing a growing portfolio of FPV and unmanned aerial systems aimed not only at the commercial drone market, but increasingly at defense and security applications. Based in Osijek, Orqa designs and manufactures advanced FPV and unmanned systems, combining drone platforms, flight electronics, control systems and other components within its own technology ecosystem. The company describes its approach as fully vertically integrated, giving it greater control over product development, manufacturing and supply chains.
From FPV Technology to Tactical UAS
Orqa's defense-oriented portfolio includes the MRM family of unmanned systems, developed for applications ranging from training to tactical operations. One example is the MRM1-5, an EU-manufactured multi-role tactical trainer designed as a dual-use platform.
The MRM1-5 features a reinforced carbon-fibre airframe intended to withstand demanding training and close-quarter operating conditions. According to Orqa, the platform can also serve as a payload delivery system capable of carrying up to 1 kg over a range of 7 km, while its modular design supports other operational roles. The system integrates with Orqa's Tac.Ctrl and Ground Station, allowing operators to build experience that can transfer across the company's wider tactical drone ecosystem.
This approach reflects the increasing importance of small unmanned systems in modern military operations. Compact FPV platforms can provide forces with flexible aerial capabilities while also serving as relatively accessible training and reconnaissance tools.
Vertical Integration and Secure Supply Chains
A major part of Orqa's defense proposition is its focus on controlling the technology and manufacturing chain. The company states that, rather than simply assembling components from third-party suppliers, it designs and manufactures its own components. This vertical integration is intended to give Orqa greater control over performance, development and product reliability.
Supply-chain security is particularly relevant for military drone programs. Orqa highlights the dependence of many drone systems on Chinese-made components as a potential security and scaling concern and positions its European manufacturing approach as an alternative. Its enterprise portfolio includes NDAA-compliant FPV components designed and manufactured in the EU, including flight controllers and electronic speed controllers intended for mission-critical applications.
The company's defense activities also extend beyond individual drone platforms. Orqa has continued developing the broader infrastructure surrounding unmanned systems, including control, video, radio and ground-station technologies. This creates an ecosystem approach in which hardware and supporting technologies are developed to work together rather than as isolated products.
Building a European Defense Drone Capability
Orqa's development illustrates how Europe's growing demand for unmanned systems is creating opportunities for specialized technology companies. Originally established around FPV technology, the Croatian company has expanded toward systems designed for military and enterprise users, while maintaining its focus on in-house engineering and manufacturing.
The company has also established a U.S. presence through Orqa U.S., a strategic partnership with By Light focused on producing compliant unmanned systems for the American defense market. The U.S. operation is intended to provide an onshore manufacturing capability and expand access to Orqa's technology within the American defense industrial base.
From its base in Osijek, Orqa is therefore positioning itself at the intersection of FPV technology, tactical unmanned systems and defense manufacturing. Its emphasis on vertically integrated production, secure supply chains and scalable UAS platforms reflects a broader shift toward domestically controlled drone technologies for European and allied defense applications.
