PAS 2025 - Foudre: France's Next-Generation Modular Rocket Launchers for a Secure Europe

Introduction of the Foudre: Enhancing European Artillery Capabilities

The unveiling of the Foudre, an innovative multiple rocket launcher system developed by Turgis Gaillard, at the 2025 Paris Air Show marks a significant advancement in France’s military capabilities. As Europe seeks to diminish reliance on non-European defense systems, this mobile and modular artillery solution presents a domestically engineered alternative to existing options like the American HIMARS.

Design and Features

The Foudre’s chassis is based on the heavily modified Renault Kerax 6×6 off-road truck, engineered for superior ballistic protection and enhanced off-road mobility. Key features include:

  • Armored Cabin: Designed to safeguard against nuclear, biological, radiological, and chemical (CBRN) threats, the cabin accommodates a crew of three: a driver, a commander, and a firing operator.
  • Independent Power Supply: The rear section houses batteries dedicated solely to firing operations, ensuring robust energy availability without draining the vehicle’s operational power.
  • Hydraulic Suspension: The incorporation of hydraulic cylinders strengthens the chassis during firing, allowing for swift deployment without the need for stabilizing outriggers.

Versatile Munitions Capability

The Foudre is unprecedented among European systems, capable of launching a diverse range of guided munitions, including:

  • Short-range rockets and missiles effective up to 75 km
  • Long-range cruise missiles extending up to 1,000 km

The system supports an interchangeable firing rack that can rotate ±180°, with future plans for full 360° rotation, enhancing its operational flexibility.

Interoperability and Transportability

A significant advantage of the Foudre is its compatibility with French, European, and various international munitions, including those from MBDA/Safran and Thales/Ariane Group. Its modular design promotes seamless integration into multinational command structures and facilitates multi-domain operations. Notably, it is fully air-transportable via C-130 Hercules and A400M aircraft, allowing rapid deployment to diverse theaters of conflict and supporting amphibious landings—capabilities currently lacking in the French Army’s legacy LRU systems.

Addressing Current Gaps

The introduction of the Foudre addresses the imminent obsolescence of France’s existing LRUs, which are based on the now-dated M270A1 rocket launcher, expected to retire by 2027. The French military is in urgent need of a system that can rapidly relocate after firing to evade enemy detection, a requirement that the Foudre effectively fulfills.

Sovereign Development and Innovation

Turgis Gaillard has funded the development of the Foudre independently, showcasing a commitment to enhancing French and European technological sovereignty. Unlike other national projects that remain in the conceptual phase, the Foudre is a working prototype, representing a leap in France’s military innovation. It aligns with the French Long-Range Land Strike (FLP-T) initiative, which mandates in-the-field capabilities of up to 150 km, as well as the European Long-Range Strike Approach (ELSA), which aims for strike capabilities reaching 2,000 km.

Strategic Implications

This advanced artillery system embodies the priorities of mobility, modularity, and adaptability, catering to current and evolving military demands. Produced domestically in France, the Foudre addresses both sovereignty concerns and economic imperatives, optimizing production through national industrial collaborations. Importantly, it remains open to integrating allied munitions, bolstering logistical robustness and promoting European defense cooperation.

Projected Timelines and Future Outlook

With initial test firings scheduled for mid-2026 and anticipated deliveries starting late 2027, the Foudre is positioned to fill critical gaps within the French Army before existing artillery systems become entirely inadequate.

Turgis Gaillard’s Foudre stands as a testament to France’s ambition to cultivate a modern, sovereign long-range strike force. As European defense capabilities advance, this system not only reflects a commitment to strategic autonomy but also positions France at the forefront of modern military technology on the continent.
