Shadow Nautics: A Croatian Shipbuilding Story on the Rise

On the Dalmatian coast, in Šibenik, a company has grown from modest vessel-maintenance work into a certified shipbuilder specializing in custom marine engineering: Shadow Nautics.

About Shadow Nautics

Shadow Nautics is led by Marko Košuljandić, who serves as managing director alongside co-owner Borna Čermak Marinković. Based in the Šibenik area, the team specializes in building custom vessels - from civilian craft to more specialized designs for institutional and defense clients. Their work spans the full process, from design and engineering through to the physical construction of hulls, interiors, and onboard systems.

The company has also branched out into a few adjacent capabilities over the years, including underwater works around ports and marinas, which fits naturally with the hands-on, maritime nature of their core business.

The Shadow Patrol 47

The project that has brought the company the most public attention is the Shadow Patrol 47, nicknamed "Modrulj," a multi-purpose patrol vessel built for inspection and sea rescue missions. Its end users are the Croatian Ministry of Defense, specifically the Croatian Navy and the Coast Guard.

Specifications include:

  • Length: 14.5 meters
  • Beam: 4.2 meters
  • Top speed: 36 knots; cruising speed: 28 knots
  • Range: 270 nautical miles
  • Crew: 3, with capacity for multi-day deployments

Development took three years, covering design documentation, molds, approvals, and all the components needed for construction. The hull, interior, shafts, propellers, rudders, and other key systems were built in-house at Shadow Nautics, with other Croatian companies contributing ballistic protection components.

The vessel also drew attention at a military parade in Zagreb, seen as evidence that Croatian shipbuilding and innovation still hold an important place in the European defense industry, and is described as designed for coastal security and surveillance of territorial waters.

Expansion Plans

The company's managing director, Marko Košuljandić, has discussed plans to build a new production facility in the Podi industrial zone near Šibenik, with the stated goal of employing young people from the city.
