Enhancing Armored Mobility: The Zeybek 8×8 Tank Transporter

As the Altay main battle tank (MBT) program progresses into the production phase, the Turkish Army is poised to address a critical logistical need: armored vehicle transport capability. At the IDEF 2025 defense exhibition, BMC introduced the Zeybek 8×8 armored tank transporter, designed to enhance the mobility of armored formations.

Context and Development of the Altay MBT

The Turkish Land Forces (TLF) are expected to receive their first Altay MBTs in the coming years, marking a significant development in Turkey’s domestic military production. The long-anticipated Altay program aims for the assembly of:

  • 80 T1 Baseline Tanks
  • 170 T2 Upgraded Vehicles
    • Enhanced armor and situational awareness features.

The T3 variant, which aims to replace the current crewed turret with an unmanned model utilizing an autoloader, currently has only one prototype under development. The TLF’s eventual requirement encompasses 1,000 MBTs. According to the production strategy revealed by the Turkish Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) last February, all T1 units are scheduled for completion by 2028, transitioning to T2 production thereafter.

Transporting Heavy Armor

Given the Altay’s operational weight of over 65 tons, efficient transport methods are essential for rapid redeployment during operational contingencies. The Zeybek 8×8 tank transporter, showcased prominently at the IDEF exhibition, stands out as a solution to meet this logistical challenge.

Specifications of the Zeybek 8×8

The Zeybek 8×8 armored tank transporter is built on a robust chassis, integrated with features that enhance its operational adaptability:

  • Engine: Powered by a Cummins turbodiesel intercooler producing 675 hp.
  • Transmission: Coupled with an Allison fully automatic transmission equipped with a torque converter and a 2-speed transfer case for optimal traction on diverse terrains.
  • Mobility:
    • Range: 800 km
    • Maximum Gradient: 60% at curb mass; 30% at gross combined mass.
    • Side Slope Capability: 30% with water fording capability of 750 mm.

The transport vehicle’s dimensions are as follows:

  • Length: 9,450 mm
  • Height: 3,750 mm
  • Width: 3,250 mm (including mirrors)

The Öztreyler Trailer

The accompanying semitrailer, manufactured by Öztreyler, complements the Zeybek transporter with features suited for heavy load logistics:

  • Length: 16,390 mm, with a loading area measuring 11,000 mm by 3,800 mm.
  • Axle Configuration: Equipped with 12 pendel axles featuring hydraulic suspensions, 10 of which are steerable, yielding a turning radius of 25 meters.
  • Tire Configuration: Each axle supports two 285/75R 19 tires, aggregating to a total of 24 tires. Spare tires are also included for operational readiness.
  • Kerb Mass: The tank carrier’s weight is 33,000 kg.

Additional features of the trailer include:

  • Loading equipment for armored vehicle operations.
  • Secure fixing eyebolts for vehicle stabilization.
  • Coupling mechanisms designed for 20-foot container transport.

Conclusion

The introduction of the Zeybek 8×8 armored tank transporter signifies a pivotal step in enhancing the Turkish Army’s logistical capabilities. As the TLF integrates the Altay MBT into its arsenal, efficient mobility through advanced transport solutions will be crucial for maintaining operational effectiveness in modern combat environments.
