Advancements in Autonomous Aviation: U.S. Military Tests Optionally Piloted Black Hawk

CAMP GRAYLING, Mich., October 30, 2025 — A significant milestone in military aviation occurred recently when a soldier, not a conventional pilot, successfully planned and executed operational missions using the Optionally Piloted (OPV) Black Hawk helicopter developed by Lockheed Martin Sikorsky. This advanced aircraft utilizes MATRIX™ technology to enhance autonomous capabilities, marking a transformative step in operational logistics and personnel recovery.

Innovations Through Collaboration

In partnership with the Joint Personnel Recovery Agency and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Sikorsky introduced the OPV Black Hawk during Northern Strike 25-2 in August. This exercise showcased how autonomous capabilities can enhance mission execution while minimizing risk to personnel in the field. This collaboration illustrates the military’s shift towards integrating cutting-edge technology into active-duty operations.

Soldier-Driven Mission Command

A U.S. Army National Guard Sergeant First Class, having received under an hour of training, became the first soldier to autonomously plan and direct OPV Black Hawk missions using a user-friendly handheld interface. Notably, he orchestrated multiple precision cargo drops over a distance of 70 nautical miles—a feat that highlights the potential of autonomous aircraft to operate effectively under the command of non-pilots.

Key Operational Demonstrations

Among the highlights of Northern Strike were several groundbreaking exercises that demonstrated the diverse capabilities of the OPV Black Hawk:

  • Precision Logistics Mission: From a Coast Guard vessel located on Lake Huron, the sergeant executed a Class 1 resupply mission utilizing the tablet interface. The OPV Black Hawk performed two precision parachute drops from varying altitudes, underscoring its ability to conduct complex logistical operations guided entirely by a soldier.
  • Autonomous Sling Load Capability: In a notable first, the OPV Black Hawk executed an autonomous connection of a 2,900-pound water tank while airborne. This capability exemplifies the helicopter’s advanced hover stability and its potential for conducting resupply missions without the need for direct pilot interaction.
  • Personnel Recovery Simulation: The aircraft demonstrated its versatility by conducting six autonomous hookups to transport HIMARS launch tubes and facilitate a simulated medical evacuation. For the first time, an untrained soldier managed an autonomous MEDEVAC operation, enabling a seamless transition of a patient to a piloted Black Hawk at a rugged landing site.

Implications for Future Military Operations

Rich Benton, Vice President and General Manager of Sikorsky, emphasized the transformational impact of the MATRIX flight autonomy system on military operations. The system’s ability to either lessen the burden on human pilots in high-stress environments or conduct missions autonomously without personnel on board illustrates a significant evolution in tactical logistics.

MATRIX technology, aligned with DARPA’s Aircrew Labor In-cockpit Automation System (ALIAS), empowers operators with capabilities traditionally reserved for skilled aviators. This advancement allows for vital missions—such as resupply and personnel recovery—particularly in high-risk or limited-visibility settings, without endangering human lives.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Autonomous Military Aviation

Sikorsky’s achievements at Northern Strike serve as a compelling example of the potential offered by autonomous aviation technologies in expanding the capabilities of military forces. As the U.S. military explores these systems, the integration of optionally piloted aircraft may redefine strategic logistics, provide operational resilience, and enhance flexibility in resource deployment.

As the defense establishment continues to seek dependable and innovative solutions, Sikorsky stands at the forefront of shaping the future landscape of agile and adaptive aviation systems, reimagining how military operations are conducted in complex scenarios.
