WDS 2026 - Frankenburg Technologies Mark I Ultra Short-Range Air Defence Missile Nearing Mass Production

Addressing the UAS Challenge: Insights from the World Defense Show

Overview of the UAS Threat

The proliferation of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) has emerged as a critical challenge in contemporary defense operations. Addressing this threat was a focal point at the recent World Defense Show, with discussions centered on strategies for mass production and cost-effectiveness in counter-UAS systems.

Frankenburg Technologies, based in Tallinn, Estonia, has made strides in this area with its innovative Mark I ultra short-range air defense missile, designed specifically to neutralize aerial threats like drones. The company is poised to initiate mass production of a ground-based version, which signifies a significant advancement in affordable defense solutions.

The Mark I Missile System

Specifications and Capabilities

The Mark I missile is a compact system, featuring:

  • Launch Mass: Under 2 kg
  • Dimensions: Length of 660 mm and a diameter of 60 mm
  • Range: Effective against targets up to 2 km away and at altitudes of 1,500 meters
  • Propulsion: Powered by a solid-fuel rocket motor
  • Warhead: Equipped with a 0.5 kg high explosive-fragmentation warhead, featuring a proximity fuse and self-destruct capability
  • Guidance System: Utilizes an electro-optic seeker, suitable for both day and low-light conditions

Before launch, the system integrates data from ground-based sensors such as radars and electro-optical systems to optimize missile targeting. The primary targets identified include long-range attack drones—particularly the Shahed model—and various reconnaissance drones like the Orlan and Zala types currently employed by Russian forces.

Performance Metrics

Frankenburg Technologies has noted that the Mark I is specifically designed to engage slow-flying targets with velocities ranging from 150 to 200 km/h, as well as jet-powered drones capable of speeds between 400 and 650 km/h. While specific maximum speed details remain undisclosed, the missile’s effectiveness against these aerial threats is well established.

Versatility of the Launch System

The missile was showcased in a compact, tripod-mounted format, featuring a pan-tilt head capable of supporting two missiles on each side. The system is constructed with modularity in mind, allowing for diverse configurations tailored to specific operational needs. Though the pricing for the Mark I has not been revealed, it is indicated to be competitively lower than the estimated $50,000 cost of a Shahed drone.

Future Developments

A notable advancement for the Mark I is in the pipeline: a radio frequency seeker that will enhance its all-weather capabilities. This upgrade, part of the missile’s modular design, facilitates on-site assembly and streamlined production processes.

Frankenburg Technologies has a workforce of approximately 70 employees across its headquarters in Estonia and operational arms in Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Denmark, Poland, and the UK. Plans are in place to double this workforce by the end of the year.

Upcoming Innovations

The company is also developing an air-to-air variant of the Mark I, which will feature a two-missile launcher system. The anticipated design will weigh under 8 kg, enabling integration on smaller drones, and effectively converting them into offensive capabilities. Currently, this air-to-air version is at Technology Readiness Level 6, with a prototype demonstration planned for March 2026.

Strategic Implications

Frankenburg Technologies is setting a benchmark in the realm of affordable and efficient counter-UAS solutions. As nations bolster their aerial defense against increasingly sophisticated drone threats, innovations like the Mark I missile could significantly alter the landscape of modern military engagements. As production ramps up, its deployment could prove pivotal in enhancing the defense architecture of frontline states facing such aerial risks.
